The United States Botanic Garden is one of the oldest public gardens in the United States, according to the Architect of the Capitol. In our horticulture, programs, and operations, we practice sustainable techniques as well as inform visitors about resources and what they can do at home.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative is a collaborative effort between the USBG, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to develop national standards and performance goals for sustainable land design, construction, and upkeep practices. The U.S. Green Building Council is an involved member of the Initiative, and it expects to incorporate the guidelines

The USBG has collaborated with the EPA Office of Water to develop and implement Green Infrastructure and Low Impact Design methods in order to serve as a role model for other federal agencies.
