Biography & Tour

Formed at the University of Notre Dame in 1997, Umphrey’s McGee began experimenting with their sound early on, quickly transitioning from a progressive rock leaning jam band to incorporating heavier influences from metal and jazz fusion. This sonic shift was representative of the type of growth the band would undergo over the next two decades, always striving to push themselves creatively and sonically.
After self-releasing their first album in 1998, the band began to tour heavily, expanding their reach beyond the Midwest. In 2002, they released Local Band Does O.K., their first album with a major label (Sanctuary Records). This was followed by Anchor Drops in 2004, which saw the band’s sound continue to evolve.
The band’s 2006 album, Safety in Numbers, was a turning point, with the band exploring even more sonic territory and songwriting maturity. The album would go on to earn them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
2008’s The Bottom Half saw the band return to their jam band roots, while 2010’s Mantis found them once again pushing their boundaries.
After nearly two decades and 10 albums, Umphrey’s McGee shows no signs of slowing down. They continue to tour relentlessly, always striving to give their fans an unforgettable live experience.
